Board of Health · Meeting of October 19, 2026
CHATHAM — The Chatham Board of Health approved a septic variance letting a Stage Island Road home add a fifth bedroom. The board voted 5-0 to approve an innovative/alternative FAST treatment system for 321 Stage Island Road, presented by engineer David Clark of Clark Engineering on behalf of the Hatton family, with the leach field placed beneath the driveway. Conditions include a deed-restricted five-bedroom cap, twice-yearly effluent monitoring to meet a 19-milligram-per-liter nitrogen standard, and a future obligation to connect to municipal sewer.
One member called the board's focus on septic nitrogen calculations "a drop in the bucket" compared with broader public health threats like pathogens and pharmaceuticals in groundwater. New Health Agent Lucas Amato told the board all residential grinder pumps are now provided at no cost, and agreed to compile sewer-hookup cost data and grant-fund balances after a member requested it following an earlier request from town official Jeff Dykens.
