Barnstable School Committee hears state graduation overhaul proposal
School Committee · Meeting of August 19, 2026
Barnstable schools brief on looming graduation overhaul as summer building work tops $7.6 million. Superintendent Sarah told the School Committee a state council's proposed statewide graduation framework could require end-of-course exams, a state-run post-secondary planning platform and a capstone project for every student by the 2028-29 school year, with no funding attached. Committee member Jen warned of "an unfunded mandate," while member Andre argued the district should hold to standards "comparable to what we had with the MCAS." Facilities Director Doug reported roughly $7.6 million in summer capital work across nine schools, including new pickleball and tennis courts and a renovated culinary classroom at the high school.
The committee also learned the New England Association of Schools and Colleges voted in June to lift Barnstable High School's accreditation warning status, approved signing bonuses of up to $2,000 for new bus drivers, and recommended the town council authorize up to 10-year bus transportation and five-year food service contracts.
