Committee Moves to Pursue Monument Road Parcel

Other Committee 2026-09-16 Part 2 · Meeting of September 16, 2026

Orleans Open Space Committee eyes partnership deal for scenic Monument Road parcel near Pilgrim Lake. Chair Merrill O'Connell presented GIS maps of the 0.7-acre property, listed for $595,000 and on the market for 90 days, which abuts town conservation land and offers one of the only public views of the lake. Select Board liaison Kevin Galligan, speaking as an Orleans Conservation Trust trustee, said the trust's board "did vote at the trustee level to consider this for a neighborhood type acquisition fundraising approach." Member Chris Keating, who agreed to lead neighbor outreach, warned that without protection "if someone were to build a big mansion there, it would just be awful." Elsewhere, members learned Eldridge Park's redesign will save nine native trees and that Putnam Farm's new barn holds its ribbon-cutting October 1.

The committee took no formal vote but reached consensus to continue pursuing the purchase jointly with the trust.
