Eastham Finance Committee Clears Warrant, Splits on Optional Spending Enhancements

EASTHAM — March 26, 2026 — Eastham's Finance Committee advanced nearly the entire town meeting warrant at its March 26 session, voting unanimously on the general operating budget, collective bargaining totaling $1.575 million, nine zoning amendments, and a utility easement acquisition stalled since 2019. The sharpest divisions came on four optional budget enhancements pulled from the core level-services budget: Council on Aging program staff passed 4-0-5, Recreation Department staff at $87,500 passed 4-0-5, preschool tuition program funding passed 5-1-4, and expansion of online permitting townwide at $45,000 drew one vote in favor and eight abstentions, with several members saying they preferred to leave those choices to voters at town meeting. A citizens petition for a nonbinding Medicare-for-all resolution was rejected 0-1-8, with members citing insufficient information to form a recommendation. Town Planner Paul explained that a previously proposed prohibition on shipping containers was pulled from the warrant by the Select Board, leaving containers treated as ordinary accessory structures subject to building permits and setback requirements.
