FinCom adopts simpler nitrogen-funding article wording
Finance Committee · Meeting of September 24, 2026
Orleans Finance Committee votes to simplify a warrant article seeking modest funding to educate taxpayers on alternatives to sewering. Member David Abel moved the final language, approved unanimously, asking only to "provide a modest funding allocation to begin bringing the appropriate experts in front of the town to explain... feasibility, costs, and likely effectiveness of the multiple potential paths, including sewering." Member Edmund Mahoney opened by thanking a colleague, called Todd, for presenting the committee's case at the Select Board a night earlier. One estimate put the town's long-range sewering program at "somewhere between three quarters of a billion and a billion dollars" over nearly 40 years, with homeowner betterment fees expected to climb from roughly $10,000 to six figures in later phases.
The committee also approved minutes from August 27 and September 10 and must vote on Special Town Meeting warrant articles by its October 8 meeting, ahead of an October 17 print deadline.
