Health board OKs grease trap for Hyannis theater
Board of Health · Meeting of September 29, 2026
Barnstable Board of Health clears grease trap for Hyannis theater conversion and untangles two septic bedroom disputes. The board voted unanimously to approve an 8,000-gallon grease trap variance, split into two 4,000-gallon tanks, for architect Stephen Fleschman's renovation of the former Cape Cod Mall Cinema into nine smaller cinemas plus live theater and cabaret seating, targeting a Memorial Day opening. Engineer Peter McIntyre got conditional approval for a Centerville septic repair after a dispute over whether the house has three, four or six bedrooms, settled with a three-bedroom deed restriction.
Engineer Chuck Roland won approval for a saltwater-estuary nitrogen variance at 108 Bay Road after Health Director Tom McKean apologized for an earlier mix-up comparing the project to the wrong prior approval, calling the request "manifest injustice" otherwise. The board also heard that a Hyannis-area supermarket has drawn roughly five pest complaints in recent months, with vendor Rent-A-Kill reporting 38 sealed sub-slab pits and five weekly inspections; a follow-up is set for December 15.
