ORLEANS — May 21, 2026 — Orleans Board of Health approves septic variances for four properties while denying I/A monitoring reductions for two unproven systems. The board voted unanimously on all contested wastewater items at its May 21 meeting, granting a six-month sewer connection deferral for the town's planned fire station at 157 Route 6A — conditioned on a septic inspection and occupancy verification — and approving nitrogen-management variances at 4 Nickerson Road and 96 Briar Spring Road, the latter for a four-bedroom MicroFAST I/A system whose nitrogen load calculations showed a 25 percent improvement over a standard three-bedroom system. The board reduced quarterly testing to twice yearly for 15 Seaview Road, whose Advantex system has posted a median total nitrogen of 14.8 parts per million over three-plus years — well below the 19 parts per million threshold. But it turned down identical reduction requests from Copper Rose Services for properties at 47 Daley's Terrace and 93 Nauset Heights Road, both newly installed systems with no performance data, requiring at least four quarterly tests before reconsideration. Health Agent Meredith told the board that of roughly 80 I/A systems in town, only 40 to 50 are registered in the Barnstable County database, and directed staff to prepare a one-page I/A monitoring policy for the June 18 agenda.
