Orleans Committee Consensus Points to Tonset Road Extension as Next Infrastructure Priority

ORLEANS — June 1, 2026 — Orleans Complete Streets Advisory Committee sets Tonset Road Extension as its next major priority. The committee reached consensus at its June 1 meeting that Tonset Road Extension, which connects the Main Street sidewalk spine toward the Eldridge Parkway recreation complex and police station, should follow the ongoing Main Street and Beach Road projects in the town's capital pipeline. DPW Director Calvin Sutherland said the Main Street sidewalk engineering RFP process is targeted to launch in July — a roughly three-month process to reach a signed contract — and that the Main Street design will already incorporate planning for eventual Tonset Road Extension work. Fire Chief Jeff Dieringer supported the prioritization but cautioned that state involvement at the Route 28 intersection would complicate execution; he also backed permanent speed tables over the town's portable unit, noting installation cost estimates had come in "closer to a hundred" thousand dollars, and suggested free cash as the appropriate funding vehicle. The committee voted 7-0, with one abstention, to approve May minutes and agreed to skip its July 6 meeting, scheduling its next session for August 3.
