Orleans energy panel seeks EV charger rate hike

Other Committee 2026-09-10 Part 2 · Meeting of September 10, 2026

Orleans energy committee says the town is losing money on its own EV chargers. Members reviewed figures showing August EV charging revenue reached about $3,300 from 221 drivers, up from $770 a year earlier, but noted the roughly 33-to-34-cent-per-kilowatt-hour rate sits below the town's own 37-cent electricity cost, calling the setup "really good for the drivers, not so good for us." The committee asked the assistant town manager's office to benchmark rates in Barnstable and Chatham. Members also elected David Jacobson committee secretary, accepted July 9 minutes with one abstention, and learned the town's wastewater sewer project starts next week with a roughly seven-month detour around Route 28 near Finley Road.

The group opted to hold off on resubmitting the state's stretch energy code, worth up to $53 million in Climate Leader Communities funding, until the spring Annual Town Meeting rather than the November 16 session.
