Second West Nile-Positive Mosquito Sample Confirmed Near Sider's Pond

FALMOUTH — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has confirmed a second West Nile virus-positive mosquito sample in Falmouth, this one collected in the vicinity of Sider's Pond, the town announced Aug. 5. It is the second positive sample of the 2026 season, following an earlier positive test from the same area on July 21.

The West Nile finding adds to a summer already marked by heightened public health alerts in Falmouth. The town's Level 2 significant drought declaration, first issued and updated in mid-June, also remains in effect, a reminder that dry conditions have persisted alongside the mosquito activity. The Falmouth Public Library has a busy stretch of programming ahead this week. A "Science Heroes" interactive S.T.E.M. show hits the Main Library on Thursday, Aug. 6, at 3 p.m. On Friday, Aug. 7, the library hosts "Flying High Dogs" at 1:30 p.m., followed by a Narrative Nonfiction Book Club discussion of "Quiet" at 4 p.m. The East Falmouth branch has its own slate, including Library LEGO Time and "Why Knot Knit Nite" on Aug. 6.
