Charter panel delays fall town meeting call
The Harwich Charter Commission postponed a decision on whether to add a mandatory fall town meeting to the town's draft charter.
Other Committee · Meeting of October 29, 2026
HARWICH — The Harwich Charter Commission postponed a decision on whether to add a mandatory fall town meeting to the town's draft charter. Members reviewed a Brewster-style compromise that would let the select board cancel a fall session unless more than five citizen petitions were filed, with one member proposing raising that threshold to ten. Commission member John said he'd "leave it up to the select board to make that call," while member Herb questioned why Harwich dropped a two-meeting system decades ago, saying it "operated very successfully that way for many years." The commission voted unanimously to keep draft charter language on collective bargaining unchanged after attorney Chris Brown found no legal problem with it, rejecting a request from the Harwich Education Association.
The panel faces a November 19 deadline to submit its final charter draft to the state attorney general's office, with decisive votes expected November 5 and November 12.
