Eastham Board of Health Approves Four Septic Variance Requests at August Meeting
Board of Health · Meeting of August 3, 2026
Eastham Board of Health unanimously approves four septic variance requests and reviews first-ever Nitro wastewater system application. At the August 3 meeting, the board cleared projects at 12 Nykoma Way, 11 Bayberry Lane, 380 Mill Road, and 23 Beach Plum Lane, all with deed restrictions recorded at Barnstable County Registry of Deeds and operation-and-maintenance requirements running for the life of each system. The most technically novel item was 12 Nykoma Way, where engineer Laura of Schofield Brothers presented the Nitro innovative-alternative system, which uses wood chips and anaerobic bacteria to reduce total nitrogen to 11 milligrams per liter — well below the 19-milligram standard for older systems such as Advantex.
Health Director Axel told the board the system's DEP provisional permit has lapsed while renewal is pending, but said the board is within its authority to approve conditionally and that he would contact the state before installation. All four approvals carry a validity date of July 30, 2027.
