Falmouth Board of Health hears watershed nitrogen plan, approves one septic system

Falmouth Board of Health gets first look at townwide nitrogen watershed plan, presses for firmer sewer timeline. The town's wastewater superintendent, working with consultants GHD and Science Wares, outlined a multi-decade plan required under 2023 state watershed permit regulations, sorting neighborhoods into sewer, nitrogen-removing septic, and other-strategy categories through 2050. Board member George said residents face "great angst" not knowing whether they face a sewer or septic mandate, prompting confirmation that no additional sewering beyond the Great Pond Phase 1 project can occur until a new ocean outfall is ready, projected for 2031 to 2032.
The outfall's environmental review comment period, twice extended, now closes September 18. The board separately approved an innovative septic system for a vacant Trotting Park Road lot unanimously, but left open a 32 Eldridge Drive variance hearing pending drinking water well testing.
