Falmouth Select Board approves 3-2 softball field CPA bid

Select Board · Meeting of August 10, 2026

Falmouth Select Board splits 3-2 on softball field funding as capital costs loom. The board authorized a Community Preservation Act application for repairs to a deteriorated Teaticket Highway softball field used by the roughly 350-member Cape Cod Codgers, with member Douglas Brown dissenting, saying "I have major concerns and I'm not in favor" of the roughly $500,000 project. Separately, the board unanimously backed a $150,000 state dredging grant application for the Eel River Inlet and approved license changes for two local businesses.

New Finance Director John Arnett walked the board through an $885 million 10-year capital plan, warning that Lawrence School renovation and sewer outfall costs could push the median $749,000 home's tax bill up nearly $700 in fiscal year 2029. Vice Chair Colin Reed asked how to fit "almost $1 billion of capital projects" into an affordable plan. The board did not complete its vote to transmit the FY27 capital budget to the Finance Committee.
