Harwich panel delays votes on $350,000 land requests
Other Committee · Meeting of September 18, 2026
Harwich land committee stalls on $350,000 in conservation buys, opens elementary school land hunt. The panel postponed votes on two Harwich Conservation Trust Community Preservation Act requests: $200,000 toward a $400,000 half-acre marsh-access parcel at 202 Route 28 in West Harwich, and $150,000 toward a $330,000, 2.3-acre parcel on Round Cove Road bought from St. Peter's Lutheran Church.
Executive director Michael Locke said the Route 28 purchase is "phase one" of a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk over the Herring River Marsh. Member Dave Callahan, tasked by Select Board liaison Mark Kelleher, presented an aerial survey of roughly 130 large parcels as a possible future elementary school site, including town-owned land on Oak Street and a privately held sand pit in East Harwich. Bob Spencer of the Harwich Affordable Housing Trust urged the committee to favor already-disturbed land over undeveloped sites.
Both funding votes were pushed to October 16.
