Recreation Commission Backs $535,000 Splash Pad Article
Other Committee · Meeting of September 22, 2026
Harwich recreation panel commits to $706,000 in Community Preservation Act requests, anchored by a $535,000 splash pad. The Harwich Recreation and Youth Commission voted unanimously to seek $535,000 for a splash pad at Brooks Park, $155,000 for irrigation at Memorial Field and $16,000 for basketball court resurfacing, all ahead of an October 1 Community Preservation Committee filing deadline. Consultant Eric's revised splash pad design covers 2,500 square feet and would serve 30 to 50 children depending on final features; one member argued against shrinking it further, saying "let's do it right." The commission separately backed a Harwich Conservation Trust letter of support for a $200,000 wheelchair-accessible boardwalk project near the Herring River Marsh.
A fourth item, replacing deteriorating backstop fencing at Brooks, was tabled after contractor quotes ranged from $9,918 to $29,000 for inconsistent scopes of work. Staff also flagged more than $25,000 in unpaid field-use bills from local sports organizations.
