Harwich Recreation Commission Defers Pickleball Drop-In Fee to April, Funds Storm Repairs

HARWICH — March 24, 2026 — Harwich Recreation Commission defers $20 pickleball drop-in fee vote, authorizes roughly $5,500 in storm-damage fence repairs. The commission continued its pickleball drop-in proposal to the April meeting after members flagged unresolved questions about staffing, daily participation caps, and payment controls; a $20 fee matching Brewster's forthcoming rate had been proposed to let non-members join organized play without displacing the two courts permanently reserved for free public use. Tom, a Harwich Pickleball board representative, said he would not expect more than a dozen drop-in players on a busy day, describing the program as an opportunity for visitors rather than a revenue play. The commission unanimously approved emergency repairs to storm-damaged fences at White House Field ($1,335), Senior Memorial Field ($510), and Brooks Park ($3,600), drawing from the revolving fund while Fire Chief Dave LeBlanc awaits word on a state emergency relief submission he does not expect to meet the reimbursement threshold. The commission also confirmed that newly hired program specialist Jen Anderson, a former Milton recreation director with approximately eight years of experience, will attend the April meeting.
