Orleans Conservation Commission continues Baker Pond alum hearing after lengthy review of seven-year-old study data. The commission voted unanimously July 21 to continue the public hearing on a Notice of Intent filed by BSC Group on behalf of the Town, which proposes treating 4.8 acres — about 17 percent — of the 28-acre great pond with aluminum sulfate to bind excess phosphorus and suppress harmful algal blooms, funded by a May 2026 Town Meeting appropriation. Planning Director George Miservi noted the Brewster Conservation Commission voted unanimously in support the prior week, and wetland scientist Hannah Raddatz of BSC Group presented findings from a 2019 UMass Dartmouth study showing septic effluent accounts for 45 to 76 percent of the pond's total phosphorus load.

Select Board Representative Mef Runyon cautioned that "there just is not a silver bullet," urging public education after spring cyanobacteria alerts hit three ponds already treated with alum in Orleans. The hearing was continued to August 4, 2026, pending a response from the state Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program and draft special conditions from Conservation Administrator John Janelle tailored to Baker Pond.
