Orleans historical panel backs longer demolition delay

Other Committee · Meeting of September 9, 2026

Orleans Historical Commission votes 5-0 to extend demolition delay bylaw to 18 months. The panel, chaired by Ed Marcarelli, recommended widening the bylaw to cover any building 75 years or older, not just those built before a fixed early-1920s year, and extending the review period from 365 to 547 days, aligning Orleans with Chatham and Wellfleet. Archaeologist Holly Herpster of the Public Archaeology Laboratory presented findings from a reconnaissance survey of 33 town and Orleans Conservation Trust properties, warning that "once something comes out of the ground, it loses about 90 percent of its information content." Members also debated a draft statement, written by member Charles, cautioning that new development could leave Orleans looking like "Hyannis or the Jersey Shore," and reviewed a pending $56,000 Community Preservation Act request for historic property surveys.

A public hearing on the proposed demolition of 48 Nauset Road is set for October 14.
