Orleans Recreation Advisory Committee reviews Eldredge Park design, targets September construction start

ORLEANS — June 25, 2026 — Orleans Recreation Advisory Committee advances Eldredge Park renovation toward a September construction start. The committee received a detailed walkthrough of the 75-percent-complete site plan from engineering firm Weston & Sampson at its June 25 meeting, covering five pickleball courts, an ocean-themed playground with an ADA-accessible merry-go-round and humpback whale climbing structure, new fitness equipment, hydration stations, and up to 12 pedestrian light poles. The project's current estimate from Weston & Sampson comes in just under the available $3.6 million construction budget, with bid documents expected within roughly one week and a contractor selection possible in August. A separate $425,000 park grant application is under review, with a decision possible as early as August 1. Town counsel has advised that a Friends of Recreation fundraising entity cannot be established under the town's umbrella; staff said language to allow the department to accept sponsorships and donations directly will be brought to fall Town Meeting. Member Tim was recognized at his final meeting before his term expires, while members Tracy and Sharon indicated willingness to extend their terms one year to see the renovation through.
