Orleans Transportation Committee Votes to Overhaul Bike Safety Signs, Backs Main Street Funding Push

ORLEANS -- May 4, 2026, Orleans Transportation Committee unanimously backs bicycle safety sign overhaul and girds for Main Street town meeting fight. The committee voted 8-0 at its May 4 meeting to forward a bicycle safety sign improvement plan to the Department of Public Works for implementation, based on research by members Joel Porten and Bob McDonald that identified roughly 16 town-controlled signs for replacement with the current MassDOT standard, "4 feet minimum clearance to pass", along the Beach Road-to-Rock Harbor and West Road-to-Skakett Road corridors, with DPW representative Calvin Sutton confirming 10 signs already ordered at roughly $100 each. The committee spent the bulk of the meeting strategizing for the May 11 Annual Town Meeting vote on Article 24, which seeks $500,000 in free cash and tax levy funds for Main Street design and engineering, a simple-majority item that carries no construction commitment but sits alongside a $6 million construction figure projected for 2031 in the Capital Improvement Plan. "In order to move forward with any sort of grant application, we need to have the community support," Sutton said, adding that unused design funds would return to free cash if a full grant is secured. The committee designated committee member Griffin as its floor spokesperson, backed by Chair Peter Algeo and other members prepared to field objections about trees, historic homes, and the specter of a future Beach Road extension.
