Yarmouth Town Meeting Rejects Library Bond but Approves Both School Overrides
Town Meeting · Meeting of April 28, 2026
Yarmouth annual town meeting rejected a $35.7 million library borrowing authorization while approving override budgets for both regional school districts. The library article fell short of the required two-thirds threshold on a standing count of 314 in favor and 177 opposed out of 491 total votes, meaning a $13,438,000 state grant from the Massachusetts Public Library Construction Program now risks redistribution to another community unless a debt-exclusion ballot question passes at the May 19 town election. Town counsel Jay Tallerman clarified that the ballot question remains on the May 19 ballot regardless of the town meeting outcome, and both votes must succeed for the project to proceed.
Residents approved the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District's fiscal year 2027 budget of $47,358,178, which includes a $1,481,348 Proposition 2.5 override, on a Finance Committee recommendation of six to one. Cape Cod Regional Technical High School's $4,746,886 budget, including a $680,194 override driven by a 31-student enrollment surge from Yarmouth, also passed on unanimous board support. The $54,370,811 municipal operating budget cleared without opposition.
Moderator Ken Mutey, who did not seek re-election, presided over his final annual town meeting.
