Harwich's Brooks Academy Museum Commission rejected a revised accessible ramp design and raised alarms about the cupola's place in the project budget at its July 15 meeting. Commissioners unanimously agreed the architects' current proposal — which routes wheelchair users on a lengthy detour around the rear of the building — is both aesthetically unacceptable and burdensome, with one commissioner stating the design "looks like it's out in the street." The board identified three alternatives: shifting the ramp outward by roughly one foot into the adjacent parking area, closing the existing bulkhead and installing a new basement stair on the opposite side of the building, or exploring a compact vertical platform lift. Separately, commissioners expressed concern that the cupola restoration, which requires crane work and is logically tied to the planned roof replacement, may have been cut from the budget due to cost pressures, and discussed pursuing grants or a fundraising campaign to preserve it.

The project is expected to go out for construction bids in September or October 2026.
