Board of Health · Meeting of August 20, 2026

ORLEANS — The Orleans Board of Health continued a sewer show-cause hearing and delayed a pool-fence variance, both to September 3. The board voted 3-0 to push the 8 Old Tote Road hearing after staff reported "no responses since" an unanswered June email from the property's engineer, with one member calling it "discouraging that substantive progress was being made" before stalling again. The board also granted 3-0 variances allowing a 10-foot leaching-area setback at 123 Tonset Road and reconnection of an existing 1978-code septic system at 4 Walker Road.

A no-fence pool variance for 65 Towhee Lane drew pushback from resident Patty Platten, who asked, "How long does it take for a child to drown?" Builder Don Bliss argued the board had granted an identical waiver next door at 71 Towhee Lane two years ago. The board continued that hearing 3-0, barring water in the pool until resolved. Staff also flagged a state emergency order banning kratom sales effective August 28.
