Orleans Historical Commission Votes 5-0 to Delay Demolition at 16 South Orleans Road

ORLEANS — June 10, 2026 — Orleans Historical Commission unanimously delays demolition of two 19th-century structures at 16 South Orleans Road. The commission voted 5-0 at its June 10 meeting to designate both a circa-1861 house and an 1875 barn as "preferably preserved" under Chapter 106 of the town's bylaws, rejecting arguments from the ownership group's representative that restoration costs of $2.5 million to $3 million made preservation economically prohibitive and that a prospective workforce housing developer would withdraw from the transaction if delayed. Former commission member Joan Vicks, speaking during public comment, called the delay "a pause, not a prohibition," adding that maximizing return on investment and solving the housing crisis were "not on the Historical Commission's goals." The commission also voted unanimously to send an advisory opinion to the Zoning Board of Appeals stating that a proposed development at 66 and 76 Route 6A "appears incompatible with the streetscape and would be detrimental to the historic character of the immediate area," and separately authorized its chair to sign a preservation restriction agreement for the French Cable Station Museum as part of a Community Preservation Committee compliance effort.
