Sandwich Charter wins final approval from state Legislature, governor

SANDWICH — The Town of Sandwich's rewritten home-rule Charter has received final approval from the Massachusetts Legislature and the governor, town officials announced, closing out a multiyear revision process that now takes effect for town government. Also this week: the Sandwich Police Department earned re-accreditation from the state's police accreditation commission, and the Department of Public Works confirmed paving work begins Monday on Highfield Drive.

TOWN HALL The Town of Sandwich announced that its updated Town Charter is now finalized after clearing both the Massachusetts Legislature and the governor's office. The document, which sets out the basic structure of town government, is posted on the town website for residents who want to review the changes.

Separately, the Sandwich Police Department has once again earned re-accreditation from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission, the town said. The Tax Collector's Office also reminded residents that 2026 Sandwich beach stickers are on sale now, either online at capecodbeachstickers.com or in person at Town Hall, 100 Route 6A, ahead of the summer rush.

COMMUNITY & ARTS The Sandwich Town Band's Summer Concert Series continues this month, with performances scheduled for Thursday, July 23, and Thursday, July 30. The Sandwich Chamber of Commerce is also hosting the first Mill Creek Rubber Ducky Derby on Friday, July 24.

COMING UP Paving crews are set to begin resurfacing Highfield Drive on Monday, July 20, with work running 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays; residents in the area should expect periodic access delays. The Sandwich Bikeways & Pedestrian Committee also meets Monday, July 20, followed by the Commission on Disability Subcommittee on Tuesday, July 21, and the Sandwich Housing Authority on Wednesday, July 22. On Thursday, July 23, MassDOT holds a public meeting on the Sagamore Bridge Replacement project.
