Sandwich Finalizes Updated Home Rule Charter After State Approval
SANDWICH — Sandwich's newly updated Town Charter is officially finalized after clearing the Massachusetts Legislature and receiving the governor's signature, town officials announced, formalizing a governance document years in the making. The move comes as the Department of Public Works prepares to close out summer road projects and the town leans into a "Slow Down" safety campaign ahead of a busy America 250 season.
TOWN HALL
The Town of Sandwich confirmed this week that its updated Home Rule Charter is now finalized, following approval by the state Legislature and the governor. The document is posted on the town's website for residents to review. Town officials also confirmed that official results from the May 4 Annual Town Meeting and the May 7 Annual Town Election have been posted, and thanked residents who took part in both civic events.
Separately, the Sandwich Police Department has earned re-accreditation from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission, the town said. On the infrastructure front, the Department of Public Works expects resurfacing work on Highfield Drive to begin Monday, July 20, with crews working 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays; residents in the area may see periodic access delays, with full access restored each evening. That follows resurfacing already underway on Christopher Hollow Road and nearby streets since early July.
The DPW and Police Department are also promoting the "Slow Down – In Our Town" public safety campaign as Sandwich braces for a week of America 250 celebrations and peak summer visitor traffic.
