Yarmouth Public Arts Committee backs bronze sculptures for two Bass River bridge replacements. The committee voted unanimously at its July 13 meeting to send a letter to the Select Board supporting a Friends of Bass River proposal to install bronze sculptures — a blue crab at the rebuilt Crab Creek Bridge on North Dennis Road and a school of herring at the Weir Road Bridge — as part of a seven-year, $57.2-acre Upper Bass River Headwaters Restoration. Executive director Rick Bishop and architect Marianne Agresti, a committee member who recused herself from the vote, presented early sketches by artist Neil Grant showing a two-foot bronze crab bolted to the Crab Creek buttress and a grouping of herring at Weir Road, where Bishop cited an 1853 record of the second-largest herring catch in Massachusetts.

Friends of Bass River plans to fundraise and gift the sculptures to the town, sidestepping full public procurement requirements for the artwork, though the committee's staff adviser noted that installation on public bridge structures still triggers prevailing-wage contracting under MGL Chapter 30, Section 39M. The committee also added the word "initiate" to its draft guidelines, giving itself explicit authority to originate public art projects — not only review outside proposals.
