Yarmouth wins $25 million federal grant for Route 28 upgrades
YARMOUTH — The Town of Yarmouth has been awarded a $25 million federal BUILD grant to fund improvements to Route 28, a major step forward for a regional roadway project estimated to cost more than $62 million in total.

The federal award, announced Wednesday, will support the Yarmouth–Barnstable Route 28 Improvements Project, which town officials say is designed to enhance safety, mobility, and traffic operations along one of the region's busiest corridors. The project carries an estimated total cost of $62,413,490, according to the town's News Flash announcement, with the federal grant covering a substantial share of that price tag.
The grant announcement comes amid a string of recent town updates, including an ongoing Level 2 "Significant Drought" designation for Cape Cod from the Massachusetts Drought Management Taskforce, continued repair work at the Bass Hole/Gray's Beach Boardwalk expected to wrap by the end of June, and the indefinite postponement of a library construction article at the June 24 Special Town Meeting. Residents can also review results from the May 19 Annual Town Election, which the town has posted online.
Several town boards have meetings on the calendar this week, including the Waterways & Shellfish Advisory Committee and the Zoning Board of Appeals on July 9, the Public Art Committee, Community Housing Committee, and Old King's Highway Historic District Committee on July 13, the Planning Board on July 15, and the Conservation Commission on July 16.

The Merrill Memorial Library's summer lineup continues this week with Summer Storytime for all ages on Thursday, July 9, at 10:15 a.m., followed by Shark Week Crafts the same afternoon at 3:30 p.m. On Friday, July 10, the library hosts "Unearth YOUR Story: A Poetry Workshop with The Telling Room's Young Emerging Authors" at 3:30 p.m.
Looking further ahead, the library will present "An Experiment in Birding" on Monday, July 13, at 1 p.m., featuring a talk on a birding project, followed by a Jurassic Terrariums craft program at 3:30 p.m. The library also announced it is hiring a full-time Children's Librarian to join its staff.
