Fire crews respond to blaze at Sandwich transfer station

Firefighters responded to a fire at the Sandwich transfer station, prompting a temporary closure of the facility as crews worked to bring the blaze under control, according to a report picked up via Google Alerts.

The transfer station fire comes as the town continues a run of summer infrastructure and safety work. Paving on Christopher Hollow Road was tentatively scheduled for July 27 and July 28, with crews working daily from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and resurfacing on Highfield Drive that began July 20 is ongoing, with access to homes periodically delayed during work hours.

The Sandwich Police Department has earned re-accreditation from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission, a distinction the town highlighted this week. Officials also reminded residents that the town's updated Charter has been finalized following approval by the Massachusetts Legislature and governor, and that official results from the May 4 Annual Town Meeting and May 7 Annual Town Election are now posted on the town website.

The Department of Public Works and Police Department are promoting the "Slow Down – In Our Town" safety campaign as Sandwich prepares for a week of America 250 celebrations and the height of summer tourist season. The town is also seeking an Alternate/Associate Member for the Conservation Commission and is continuing to collect resident feedback through a short-term rental survey.
