Eastham Continues Herring Pond Alum Plan to November
Conservation · Meeting of September 22, 2026
Eastham's Conservation Commission continued a Herring Pond alum-treatment application to November 10 after finding it still lacked key regulatory detail. Chair Karen Stoss told applicant volunteer Mickey Marcus the filing relied on a state exemption eliminated in 2014 and hadn't gone to state fisheries agencies for project-specific comment, calling the plan "started but very incomplete." Commissioner Mike Rivers questioned why alum was chosen over newer phosphorus-binding alternatives after wading through a 456-page state guidance document delivered days before the meeting. Separately, staff reported a district court dismissed roughly $38,000 in wetlands fines against a State Highway property owner, Gary Vecchione, after he claimed indigence, a decision staff learned of only after the fact.
"It just felt so wrong," staffer Hillary told the commission. The panel also approved five routine wetlands permits, continued a Saltworks Road pool application to October 13, and accepted a land donation at Zero Orchard Road.
