Orleans Planning Board fills three committee seats

Planning Board · Meeting of September 22, 2026

Orleans Planning Board fills three committee seats and weighs new preservation incentives. Chair Debbie Oakes, Vice Chair Lynne Eickholt, and member John Ostman were each recommended by unanimous voice vote to represent the board on the Wastewater Management Advisory Committee and Board of Water and Sewer Commissioners, the Economic Development Committee, and, in Oakes' case, the Community Preservation Committee, replacing Francesca Galazzi. Staff planner George Meservey told the board the town's demolition delay bylaw "has not been highly successful in saving buildings because it doesn't actually protect the building, it only delays its demolition," noting Orleans has roughly 1,400 properties built before 1945 but no local historic district.

Eickholt described a demolished village-center restaurant site as "the worst kind of thing we don't want to happen" and pushed for incentive-based preservation tools. Planning staffer Elizabeth Jenkins outlined a proposed quarterly round table of town boards, with a formal Select Board invitation expected before any October convening.
